Unpacked Episode 2 Showcases Next-Generation Galaxy Offerings

Following weeks of hype over Samsung’s anticipated Unpacked Episode 2, the tech giant unveiled the next generation of Galaxy devices: the Galaxy Note 3 (a phablet) and the Galaxy Gear, the company’s third foray into the smart watch arena.  While the main part of the event took place in Berlin, Samsung also took great pains to promote the new devices in the States with a concurrent event in New York City’s Times Square.  The NYC media blitz event offered a live musical performance and streaming video of the keynote presentation occurring in Berlin.  Attendees were also offered a chance to be among the first to get their hands on the latest offerings from the company.  The NYC event drew a good-sized crowd and those who stayed for the show were given blue and white Galaxy-themed baseball caps.

Experience Center

An “Experience Center” was set up in Times Square in an effort to promote the new Galaxy devices that were being introduced across the globe in Berlin.  Swedish duo Icona Pop performed live on the stage to entertain the crowd waiting to see the live feed of the main event in Germany.  The Experience Center featured a huge setup for the live feed, a curtained platform and an area for sound mixing.  The crowd was advised to stick around after the live feed for a “big surprise.”

Show and Tell

After the feed ended, dozens of blue-capped attendees were queued up to see what kind of surprise Samsung had in store.  The curtained platform was uncovered, revealing multiple tables with both the Galaxy Gear and the Note 3 placed on them.  Small groups of people were allowed to gather around the tables, where they played with both devices for about five minutes per group.  Each table had several of each of the devices; each Note 3 paired with one of the Galaxy Gear smart watches.  Employees hovered nearby to answer questions, provide information about functions and capabilities and keep an eye on the valuable devices.  Attendees seemed impressed with the new devices and capabilities, especially the updated S-pen and the connectivity exhibited by the Galaxy Gear.  Notably absent from the event was the new generation of the Galaxy Tab which was also announced during Unpacked Episode 2.

Ahead of Apple

Apple is expected to introduce its next generation of iPhones in just about a week, meaning that Samsung has gotten ahead of its rival, at least as far as releasing new devices first.  Apple is not put off at all by Samsung’s preemptive jump into the market, and is hyping its September 10th event every bit as exhaustively as Samsung hyped its Unpacked Episode 2.  We’ll see what Apple has to offer at next week’s event, but for now, Samsung is basking in the buzz created by its new offerings.

Samsung Confirms Galaxy Gear Rumors

Samsung Confirms Galaxy Gear Rumors

All the rumors swirling around Samsung’s anticipated Galaxy Gear device appear to have had their basis in fact.  September 4th will see Samsung’s Unpacked Episode 2 and the definite unveiling of the company’s latest foray into the smart watch market.

According to The Korea Times, Samsung’s executive vice president of its mobile business, Lee Young-hee confirmed the existence of the wearable computing device dubbed Galaxy Gear.  The Korea Times reported that he referred to the Galaxy Gear as a “concept device,” meaning that it is likely not ready for release to the public at large.  It was also revealed that the display on the device will not be flexible.  Previously, it had been speculated that the device could possibly incorporate a flexible screen.

Unpacked Episode 2 will take place at the IFA consumer electronics show.  The show will happen in Berlin next week and is expected to showcase some of the most cutting-edge products in the consumer electronics industry.  Samsung plays a big part with the unveiling of the new Galaxy Gear smart watch device, as well as the anticipated introduction of the Galaxy Note 3.  It is the latest addition to Samsung’s family of large smartphones.

In comments to The Korea Time, Samsung’s Lee stated that the new Galaxy Gear device would “enhance and enrich” users’ experiences with existing smart mobile technology.  The company seems to be confident in the impact that its new device will have on the mobile industry.

The Galaxy Gear represents a third attempt at entry into the smart watch field for the electronics giant, Samsung.  Two previous incarnations of a wearable smart watch-type device met with defeat.  This third stab at smart watch technology, Lee says, will “add meaningful momentum” in the mobile technology arena.

It’s important to note that Samsung has applied for a U.S. trademark for the Galaxy Gear name.  Though it looks like we won’t be seeing a mass release for the device on September 4th, we can rest assured that it’s not too far over the horizon.  With the new Galaxy Gear, the limits of mobile technology just expanded past what we see in today’s smart phones.

Samsung to Introduce Galaxy Gear Smart Watch in “Unpacked Episode 2″

Published on August 14, 2013 by in Apple, iPhone, News

 Getting the Jump on Apple

Samsung will be holding a special event on September 4th to unveil their new wearable computing device, dubbed Galaxy Gear.  In an attempt to garner interest prior to Apple’s anticipated iPhone introduction on September 10th, the company will be bringing out their third attempt at a wearable watch-like computer.  The Galaxy Gear will be Samsung’s first-ever smart watch.

Unpacked Episode 2

Insiders had, until recently, speculated that the Samsung Unpacked Episode 2 event would showcase another product, the Galaxy Note III.  This appears to still be the case, with the Note III and the smart watch sharing the spotlight.  The event, scheduled for September 4th, will be held in Berlin in advance of the 2013 IFA Consumer Electronics Limited global innovations show which will be taking place between September 6th and September 10th.

Smart Watch Rumors Confirmed

Samsung’s patent submission

Possible Layout

In an application for trademarks for Galaxy Gear, made in the U.S. and filed in August, language was present that obliterated any doubt of Samsung’s intentions.  Included in the language was a description of “wearable digital electronic devices in the form of a wristwatch, wrist band or bangle capable of providing access to the Internet and for sending and receiving phone calls, electronic mails and messages.”

Samsung’s ambitions in the wearable computing arena don’t end at smart watches, either.  A simple check of current patent filings with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office reveals that Samsung, a Korean company, holds many filings for wearable computers, including gloves and hats, as well as bracelets.

Apple Won’t Take it Lying Down

March saw rumors fly about Apple’s anticipated iWatch.  It’s been reported that Apple has approximately one hundred designers who are trying to make a wrist-watch type device that can handle some of the functions that are now associated with the iPad and iPhone.  Apple has already filed a patent for a wrist-watch type computer and is seeking to trademark the iWatch name in countries like Japan, Mexico and Taiwan.

The Lowdown

As far as trends go, you can expect to see a lot more about wearable technology.  It’s the next big thing according to people in the know.  With companies like Samsung and Apple poised to introduce the next generation of devices, wearable tech will soon be raking in its own fair share of the tech-savvy market.
